October 26, 2024 (Paradise Island, Bahamas) – Hudson Weibel posted a 7-under-par 65 Saturday to boost Houston into a narrow lead over the College of Charleston and Ball State after the second round of the White Sands Bahamas Men’s NCAA Golf Invitational at the Ocean Club Golf Course at Paradise Island, Bahamas. Twelve teams are competing in the 54-hole event scheduled through Sunday.

Houston (-28) leads Charleston (-27) by just one stroke, with Ball State (-22) another five strokes behind. Charleston, with individual leader Kieron van Wyk of South Africa at -14 (64-66), held steady near the top of the leaderboard. But Ball State made the biggest move, jumping into third place with a team total of -14 on the day. Carter Smith paced the Cardinals’ move with his 8-under 66, the second-best round of the day.

Weibel, a junior from Dallas, Texas, also improved to within one stroke of the individual lead at -13 (66-65) with a strong finish, going eagle-birdie-par on his last three holes, while his teammate Wolfgang Glawe, who held the first-round lead at 9 under, rallied to finish eagle-birdie-birdie to stand at 9 under after 36 holes.

“I had a really clean card today,” said Weibel, who tied his personal best with his 7-under round. “I played great golf, but I still feel like a left a couple out there. I missed a 4-footer for par on my first hole of the day. That hurt.”

“We’ve got a really good group, and they deserve to be in this position,” said head coach Jonathan Dismuke, who is in his 15th year at Houston. “We have great balance on this team. If we coul- play five-count five, that would be great for us.”

In addition to Weibel and Glawe, Houston used the scores of Jacob Barow of Lake Jackson, Texas, who shot a 4-under 68, and Laurez Schiergen of Germany, who carded an even-par 72. The format is play five-count four.

The best round of the day belonged to Tim Chan of Eastern Michigan, who finished with a 9-under 63. He made six birdies in an eight-hole stretch on holes 10-17. He stands at -12 for 36 holes and will be in the hunt to earn a spot in the 2025 Puerto Rico Open, which will be awarded to the individual medalist. He also propelled his team up three spots in the standings, to seventh place.

“It will be exciting to play for something like that,” said Weibel, echoing the sentiments of everyone in the hunt. There are eight players at -8 or better heading into the final round.

The rest of the team standings include Maryland (-18), in fourth, followed by Northern Illinois and West Virginia. Eastern Michigan is in seventh, followed by Rutgers, Emory, Ohio, UC San Diego and George Mason.,

Thirty-three players have sub-par scores for their 36 holes over the 6,943-yard, par 72 Ocean Club Golf Course designed by past major champion Tom Weiskopf. Houston, Mississippi, Duke and Santa Clara are past winners of the men’s competitions, with Santa Clara capturing the 2023 men’s title by four strokes.
